Giving up your pet can be a difficult decision. Most often people give up their pets because they cannot afford them or because they are unable to take care of them due to illness, family circumstances or career prospects. Whatever the reason, all pet owners want their pets to be safe and happy in their new surroundings. Here are some tips to help you find your pet a happy, healthy home.
Take your pet to the vet – Before you give up your pet make sure you take him/her to the vet for a checkup and vaccinations. It is also a good idea to neuter your pet so that they will not be used for breeding. Neutering your pet will also reduce the chances of your pet running away from their new home.
Place a classified ad in your local newspaper – Once you’ve placed your ad, make sure that you are completely honest about your pet’s behavior, good as well as bad.
Take a few good, color photos and create some posters – Create a poster with your pet’s photo, name and all his/her good traits like for example he is good with small kids, loves cats or is a good watchdog. Place these at your local gym, schools and community center.
Be careful in choosing an animal shelter – If you must keep your dog in an animal shelter make sure you carefully read the shelter’s policy document. Although some shelters have a no-kill policy, you don’t want your pet living in a kennel for the rest of his/her life.
